The Sun routes

Updated on 28 January 2026

The Sun Trails are five hiking trails, all starting from Cereglio, a small village in the municipality of Vergato.

The 5 trails start from the central square in Cereglio, where there is a totem pole illustrating the route, difficulty, and points of interest for each trek: from the easiest to the most challenging, the Vie del Sole trails are suitable for everyone, regardless of fitness level. Paper maps and credentials are also available in the village shops. Completion of each route is certified by taking a selfie at the designated checkpoints: this will earn you a stamp to put on your credential.

There are many points of natural and historical interest along the circular routes: the 15th-century village of Suzzano with its fresco of Saint Catherine of Alexandria and medieval tower, the hamlets of Cavara and Monzone, the church of San Biagio, the ancient parish church of Roffeno, and the nearby hamlet of Permigno. And then there is Monte Pero, one of the strongholds of the last German defense of the Gothic Line in the Apennines, Monte Pigna with the educational trails of the Bonifica Renana, the Rio Croara valley with Lake Ecchia (and its frightening legend) and the village of Amore.

The routes are divided into colors and, from easiest to longest and most challenging, are:

- Pink Run: 5.5 km, easy

- Blue Run: 12 km, medium

- Green Run: 14 km, medium

- Red Run: 17 km, challenging

- Black Run: 30 km, difficult
